What Is Start Proud
Start Proud aims to connect 2SLGBTQIA+ students with employers while promoting the development of 2SLGBTQIA+ professionals and celebrating the achievements and service of those in the community.
We facilitate the professional development of 2SLGBTQIA+ students as they transition from school to career in order to build a national network within the community. Our vision is to empower members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to be Canada’s leaders of tomorrow, where all institutions embrace inclusiveness within the workplace and diversity within the workforce.
About the Role:
The Board of Directors is the legal authority for Start Proud, and its members provide direction and oversight to the entire organization. Board Members must protect and develop the values of the organization and are responsible for the effective governance of Start Proud.
In this role you will:
- Understand and be committed to the goals, values, mission, and programs of the organization
- Stay apprised of issues and trends that may affect the organization
- Avoid any potential conflicts of interest
- Understand and maintain confidentiality
- Be a vocal advocate and supporter of the organization and contribute actively to sponsorship objectives
- Share your unique passions, knowledge, and experience for the advancement of the organization
- Be familiar with the organization’s policies and practices
What you’ll be doing:
- Regularly attending monthly Board meetings
- Participating in at least one Board committee
- Preparing for all meetings by reading the agenda, minutes, reports, and other documents necessary for active participation
- Making inquiries when clarification or more information is needed
- Providing financial oversight by regularly reviewing financial statements and approving the organization’s budget
- Ensuring the organization is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements
- Providing oversight of the executive
- Appointing the president executive vice presidents, corporate treasurer, and corporate secretary
- Participating in annual performance reviews of the executive
- Participating in the Board reviews
- Reviewing and recommending changes to the organization’s bylaws and policies as appropriate
- Assisting with Board recruitment and succession planning
- Developing and updating the organization’s strategy and mission as appropriate
- Managing the organization’s risks and liabilities
- Attending Start Proud events and represent the Board when engaging and connecting with key sponsors
General Details
- Term: Board Members are elected at the Annual General Meeting for a two (2) year term. There are no restrictions on the number of times an individual can run for a Board position.
- Evaluation: Board Members will be reviewed on an annual basis.
